How to name your small business

2 September 2008 65 views 2 Comments

A memorable name can be beneficial to your business as it will come to mind of your potential customers the next time that they decide to buy the type of products or avail of the services you have to offer. Naming your business may sometimes be as important as identifying your target market. Some business owners name their businesses without thinking whether their target market would be able to relate the products and services that are being offered to the name of their business. A business doesn’t need to just have a name that sounds good and looks fine on paper. The name should be associated with or at least somehow related to the product type of products or services being offered (especially when it is a name of a website also).

The name of your business should be self-explanatory. Your customers should have a clear idea as to what the business really does rather than be exposed to some fancy name without any meaning at all (although this has worked for some major Silicon Valley companies like Apple, Google, etc., very few start-ups that choose to use goofy made-up words for naming their business actually survive). Instead of looking for a name from the point of view of a business owner, one should think of a name using customer’s point of view.

Business owners should ask themselves: what specific features or advantages of my product should I emphasize when deciding on the name for my new business? Owners might want to put themselves in the shoes of customers to examine and determine what they want out of the product that is being sold to them (perhaps even conduct a focus group). Business owners should remember that the name of the company will become its identity.

Naming a business is very important. ‘Jerry’s Rapid Dry Cleaners’ conveys a lot more than ”WeCleen’ or some smarty-pants name.
