No More Free Internet?

15 September 2008 74 views No Comment

How would you feel if you woke up one day to find out that the internet is no longer free? Over the last decade 1 billion Internet users all over the world had access to information they never had in the past. All thanks to the internet. Theoretically, anyone with an Internet connection can communicate with any of the 1 billion users in real time. No one can deny that the Internet is one of the most significant inventions of the 20th century.

This is all good stuff and you’ve probably heard about it countless times. So you may be asking, what is this article all about? Well, the thing is, all the good stuff can come to an end soon.

When corporations see potential profits, the needs of the general society don’t matter. It seems that there is a plan to convert the Internet to something akin to the cable system. You will be charged a per site fee in majority of Internet sites in the future. It will be mandatory for you to sign up and provide your credit card details to gain access to specific websites.

Free information is everywhere. Can the bad guys really do that? They can and they will. Currently, Canada is seen as the testing ground for 2010. If this system becomes a success in the country, it will be implemented globally within two years. The evil can spread through buzzwords associated with “security” and “safety” measures. You can bet on it.

Websites will be packaged like cable television. Searchers will gain access to these bundled services once they subscribe. But billions of web pages will not be part of these packages so you might need to pay individually for each visit. Imagine searching for a certain bit of information for an hour, it is easy to stumble on 20 websites during this period. What do you think the cost will be?

Privacy is another issue. All your site visits will be tracked as part of the billing process. And the little guys over the web will die a slow death because no one wants to pay money to visit their pages. Every internet user will be cut off from 99% of the data easily available today. Its implications are wide and far-reaching and everyone will feel its effects (no more free porn and pirated music)
