Colors. Who would have thought that colors had a very strong influence in the minds of the customer? Whatever color you choose for your business card, web design, or logo, one thing is sure: it will have an impact on the customer’s perception.

Here’s a vivid example, one of the world’s biggest and most expensive brands, Coca-cola is strongly associated with red. Their logo is red, their advertisements are red, and even their soda bottles and cans are red. If the company suddenly decides to shift their brand color to blue, customers will have a hard time accepting the new color as the “real” Coca-cola.

Color Psychology

Don’t let the above sub-heading fool you, this content is pretty straight-forward. Color psychology is a complex field of study because it deals with perception and the mind. This study explores people’s color preferences and its effect on memory recall. The impacts of certain colors are varied in our emotional and physical state.

For example, it is believed that the color orange stimulates appetite so most restaurants try to integrate this color into their logo. Meanwhile, you will notice that most bands use the color blue. This is because blue is strongly associated with trust in customer psyche.

If you are building a start-up business, be sure to put great thought on your color scheme because it can greatly help in building the brand image. Color mismatch can negatively influence customer’s perception and make you lose sales so be careful to avoid this type of scenario.

The Green Rice Example

Try selling green rice. Everyone knows that there are different varieties of rice; there are white rice, red rice, and even brown rice. Why not be creative and introduce green rice?

The green rice has health benefits not available in any other variety of rice. Introducing this is a highly creative idea and it can potentially bring millions in sales once it is adapted by the mass market. Do you think it will sell?

Will people rush to groceries to try out this innovative creation? No. The green rice variety will never sell. This is because people disassociate the color green with rice. In fact, they might even perceive that the green potato will taste horrible and unfit for consumption despite not having tasted it even once.

Don’t let your business become the “green rice” variety by making a mistake in your color scheme.
