Switching from Blogspot domain to a free and short CO.CC
If you run an experimental blog on Blogspot or simply don’t want or can’t pay money for a custom domain name, you can turn to the free domain name registration and DNS service .CO.CC. The domain is not as premium as .COM, however it is free and not all the good domain names are taken yet.
You do however have to pay for some of the domains like
www.yahoo.co.cc - $2,297
www.froogle.co.cc - $49
www.ogilvy.co.cc - $9
Personally I don’t think it makes any sense to pay 2K bucks for a yahoo.co.cc name unless you are Yahoo! since other “less popular” domains are available at no cost.
So if you have a blog or a splog on Blogspot you can do the following to attach a custom domain name to it:
- Visit CO.CC and create an account
- Register a domain name you like
- Go to ‘Setup’ –>’Manage Domain’, and choose ‘Zone Records’
- In the ‘Host” box type in your domain name (www.yahoo.co.cc)
- Leave TTL ‘1D’
- Choose ‘CNAME’ in ‘Type’ menu
- Type ‘ghs.google.com’ in the ‘Value’ box
- Click ‘Setup’ button
Then login to your Blogspot account and do the following:
- Go to ‘Settings’–>’Publishing’
- Choose ‘Switch to custom domain’
- Find where it says ‘Already have a domain?’ and click on ‘Switch to advanced settings’
- In ‘Your domain’ box type in your domain name (www.yahoo.co.cc)
- Click ‘Save settings’
Wait up to 48 hours for your new domain to work.
Now there’s another free domain and DNS service DOT.TK, however I have not tried them yet. Dot.tk offers free and paid services and you get more options, but so far CO.CC has worked fine for me.
However when running a personal blog that has value for you my advise would be to purchase a premium domain name like .COM. Personally I use .CO.CC for splogs only. But, this is just my opinion.
