The number of Google’s clients may be around 1.5 million

The number of Google’s advertising clients has been a closely guarded secret until now. UBS Analyst Ben Schacter broke the myth of millions-gazillions advertisers in his interview to Times, and made an assumption that the company had between 1.3 and 1.5 million advertisers by the end of 2008. Google declined to provide any comment on that, but

“In a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Google said it had 1 million advertisers as of 2007. If history is any guide, we can expect the number to be much higher now. The number of advertisers on Google has grown at a steady clip, from 89,000 in 2003, to 201,000 in 2004, 360,000 in 2005 and 600,000 in 2006.”

According to the NY Times blog, on average, Google advertisers spent $16K per year and the figure changed little between 2003 and 2007.

Considering the fact that Google owns a vast share of Internet advertising market (well over 40%) it is possible to presume that the whole ad market covers only about 3 million clients out of tens of millions of small and large businesses worldwide.

This industry still has a lot of room to grow and awaits new players.

I actually assumed the number would be much higher. Google gets a huge amount of traffic on the internet so this number should really not be that surprising and I would expect it is much higher already.

Well to be under 100,000 just 8 years ago and jump to over a million is one hell of a company and you can imagine that it is only going to continue to grow by larger amounts.

Is this worldwide? I actually would have expected it to be higher. I expect to grow significantly more over the next five years.
